7 Decision Making Options For People With IDD

When someone with an intellectual or developmental disability (IDD) turns 18, they are legally an adult. That means they have the right to make their own decisions—just like anyone else.

We believe people with IDD should have the tools and support they need to make their own choices and live life on their own terms. A lot of people don’t realize that not everyone needs a guardian. In fact, many people with IDD are fully able to make their own decisions without any formal support.

We know it can be confusing. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution. What works for one person might not work for another—and that’s okay.

That’s why we created a simple guide that explains seven decision-making options in Colorado. These options range from the least restrictive—where the person stays in charge of their own choices—to more involved support for those who need it.
